THAY CHAMPASAK: A Voice from Southern Laos
Thay Champasack, known as Thay CPS, is a rising Lao pop singer from Pakse, the capital of southern Laos’ Champasak Province. Before gaining recognition, he worked as an account clerk at a local resort, commuting over 200 kilometers on his days off to record music in a small studio. Despite financial challenges and skepticism from family, Thay pursued his dream relentlessly. His breakthrough came with the hit song “ຄ່ຳຄືນນີ້” (It’s a Beautiful Night), written by acclaimed songwriter Jong Banna, which garnered over 51 million views—a monumental achievement for Laos’ modest population. Recording in his humble home studio, Thay blends heartfelt lyrics with authentic storytelling, earning him widespread acclaim. A proud representative of southern Lao culture, Thay remains deeply connected to his roots, drawing inspiration from traditional cuisine and his hometown’s natural beauty. Grateful to his fans, he continues to create music that resonates across borders while staying true to his heritage.
